Is microneedling good for acne scars?

Puberty is often bad enough, but many of us carry acneic scars from those formative years even after prescription doses have tried and failed to erase them. What has been promising, with clinicals to back it up, is microneedling that has some amazing testimonials to its regenerative abilities in reducing the appearance of wrinkles, stretch marks and yes, acneic scarring.

Why do we have acne scarring?

Inflammation from acne can cause the destruction of your skin’s structural collagen around a particular area. Sometimes, when acne is severe, the normal healing response fails to rebuild these collagen fibers correctly. When this happens, your skin loses its elasticity and becomes rougher.

In some cases, scarring or fissures can form when new skin doesn’t completely fill in after it has been damaged. These are known as atrophic scars, and are the most common type of acne scarring. Other times, your skin may become discolored or patchy and in extreme cases, erroneous collagen fibers can build up into thick scar tissue.

How does microneedling for acne work?

When you microneedle your face, legs or other areas of your body, it makes microscopic indentations in your skin’s collagen network. This triggers a natural healing response which produces an abundance of new collagen in these areas, filling them in with scar-tissue collagen. New structural proteins are produced, which means existing scarring appears smaller and less noticeable.

A microneedling routine can help erase the memory of the scar imprint. So, as your skin continues to regenerate itself with regular treatments, the appearance of the scar will diminish and your body will produce smooth, younger-looking skin in its place.
